Quiet Play

"Quiet Play Pickleball" refers to playing the game with equipment and practices designed to reduce noise. This approach is especially important in communities with noise restrictions or courts located near homes, where excessive sound can be a concern.

Quiet Play doesn't change the rules of the game, it just makes pickleball more neighbor-friendly.

Common ways "Quiet Play Pickleball" is practiced:

  • Low-Noise Paddles: These paddles are designed with materials that reduce the “pop” sound typically heard during play.

  • Paddle Overlays: Some players use felt or rubber sleeves that fit over the paddle head to soften the sound of contact during play. They can be a useful option for reducing noise on especially sensitive courts.

  • Quieter Balls: Some balls are designed to produce less noise, often by using a softer or lower-density plastic.

  • Designating Quiet Play Hours: Some facilities set specific times for quiet play, helping balance everyone’s needs.

  • Sound Barriers: Windscreens and other barriers around the court can help muffle sound for surrounding areas.

USA Pickleball maintains a list of paddles, balls, and other gear that meet their standards for reduced noise. These items are officially approved for Quiet Play and can help you stay compliant with local sound ordinances or simply be more considerate on the courts.
